Newly-promoted Luton Town are reportedly ‘keen’ on a move for Middlesbrough top goalscorer Chuba Akpom, according to Football League World.
Currently, it is unclear as to how much money Middlesbrough will require for Akpom to leave the club. He is arguably Boro’s best player at present – as such, they will likely fight tooth and nail to keep him at the Riverside Stadium for another season.
Akpom was the top goalscorer in the Championship last season, as he netted 28 goals across 40 league appearances for Boro. Therefore, it is no surprise that he is so coveted.
Who else, besides Luton Town, are looking to make a move for Chuba Akpom?
Akpom is currently one of the most sought-after players in England at this current moment in time. Besides Luton, clubs such as Everton, Werder Bremen and Borussia Monchengladbach are all thought to be interested in a move for the 27-year-old hitman.
Although this is merely speculative, Arsenal could also turn their interest to a move for Akpom. While he failed to make an impact during his time with the Gunners, his performances last season may have changed their mind – additionally, Arsenal are also currently in the hunt for a striker.
How much of a blow to Middlesbrough would losing Chuba Akpom be?
If Middlesbrough are forced to part ways with Akpom in the upcoming summer transfer window, he will need replacing – and fast. Sadly, a player of his immense talents will not be easily replicated.
Boro will likely need to sign a forward in the same mold as him, too. His blistering pace makes it almost impossible for opposing teams to play a high line against Michael Carrick’s men, which, in turn, allows them to push higher up the pitch.
A high-intensity pressing game is crucial to the way Carrick likes his team to line up. Without Akpom forcing teams into a defensive shell, this tactic will be much more difficult reliably pull off against the stronger teams in the division.
Moreover, as Cameron Archer returns to Aston Villa, Boro’s pursuit of a striker will become more vital than ever if Akpom departs the club.
