Middlesbrough are set to sign Manchester City youngster Terrell Agyemang on a free transfer in the summer, when his contract at the Etihad Stadium officially expires [via BBC Sport].

Aged 20 years old, Agyemang has plenty of potential in the modern game, with his powerful running down the flanks and pinpoint crossing. On top of this, the London native can also function as a defensive midfielder if he is called upon to do so.

Nevertheless, Pep Guardiola’s team are looking to move the player on when his contract runs out. He will officially join Middlesbrough on June 30.

What will Terrell Agyemang add to the Middlesbrough squad?

A right-back by trade, Michael Carrick may see Agyemang as a long-term replacement for Tommy Smith. Aged 31, Smith isn’t getting any younger – he played a key role in the Boro’s team last season and was an integral cog in Carrick’s system.

Despite this, Agyemang and Smith are very different players. Smith is a more defensive minded fullback – he can also play at centre-half – while Agyemang is more of an attacking wing-back. As such, if Carrick is looking to replace Smith with Agyemang, he will need to be aware of their key differences.

Who is Terrell Agyemang?

Agyemang’s career began at Charlton Athletic – he joined their under-18s squad in 2018. He remained with Charlton until 2022, when he was snapped up by Manchester City on a free transfer and was added to their under-21s team after a successful trial period.

In 2022/23, he made 13 appearances for in the Premier League 2 for Manchester City’s under-21s, registering a pair of assists during that time. Despite an impressive showing across the season that saw City lift the Premier League 2 title, Agyemang was nonetheless released by the Sky Blues at the end of the campaign – he will join Middlesbrough when his contract officially expires.
