Top 5 Strikers In The Championship This Season – Including A Former Premier League Wonderkid
The 2022/23 season in the Championship has been a genuine thrill ride. The excitement it has provided has largely been in part to the fantastic strikers on display this season – but who is the best of the best?
For this list, we’ve looked at every centre-forward in the Championship and ranked the five best. There are a couple of major exclusions – for example, we had to leave out Burnley’s Ashley Barnes.
Additionally, we will only be including one player per club – as such, there will be no striker partnerships featured on this list.
Ben Brereton Diaz
We’re cheating a little bit with this one. Ben Brereton Diaz has often found himself pushed out wide for Blackburn Rovers – but given his overall quality, we simply couldn’t leave him off the list.
Despite being played as a winger for much of the season, Brereton Diaz has scored 12 league goals this season, alongside four assists – he is still Blackburn’s primary goal threat.
Being shunted around the pitch is a good showcase of Brereton Diaz’s adaptability – however, due to this, we feel we can’t put him any higher in this list.
Iliman Ndiaye
In terms of pure talent and potential, Iliman Ndiaye may well be the best striker in the Championship – however, his goals tally does not hold up when compared to the rest of the names on this list.
Make no mistake – Ndiaye is a fantastic player and will almost definitely have a fruitful career in the world of football. But is he the best centre-forward in the Championship this season? We don’t think so.
So far, Ndiaye has scored 12 goals alongside seven assists in the Championship this season. It’s an impressive tally – but the best is yet to come for this young man.
Carlton Morris
Who expected Carlton Morris, of all people, to be one of the best strikers in the Championship this season? We certainly didn’t – but he is!
He, along with Luton Town, have exceeded all expectations this season. Despite the loss of manager Nathan Jones, the Hatters have pressed on nonetheless – currently, they are residing in 3rd position.
Morris has had a huge part to play in this. So far, the fox-in-the-box has scored 17 goals in the Championship this season, alongside seven assists.
Viktor Gyökeres
Viktor Gyokeres is the Championship’s answer to Erling Haaland. The Scandinavian hitman has been terrifying defences this season – a powerful striker with excellent link play, he is a major problem that teams in the division have yet to find a solution to.
Gyokeres has almost everything you could want in a striker. Perhaps his only weakness is his pace – but even then, he definitely isn’t slow on the ball.
Not only is Gyokeres excellent at goalscoring – he’s found the net on 18 occasions this season for Coventry City – he’s also a brilliant supplier, as evidenced by his nine assists.
Chuba Akpom>
There is simply no competition – Chuba Akpom is the best striker in the Championship this season, hands down. Possessing inhuman quickness alongside precise finishing ability, play a high line against him at your own risk.
In the current campaign, Akpom has scored a whopping 26 goals in 34 Championship games – he also has a pair of assists to his name for Middlesbrough.
Akpom began his career at Arsenal, but failed to make an impression – he then moved to PAOK, before finally ending up at Middlesbrough. Could he punish the Gunners for their mistake next season in the Premier League?
