Randolph: Boro have been unlucky this season

Middlesbrough goalkeeper Darren Randolph insists there are “lots of positives” to take away from the season so far, despite their difficult start.

Randolph believes his side have been unfortunate during some games this season, having picked up just six points from their first six games.

But despite being 18th in the table, the No.1 believes his teammates are adapting to the style of play Jonathan Woodgate is trying to introduce, and will improve with time.

“So far, so good,” said the 32-year-old, reflecting on Boro’s start to the season.

“We’ve been unlucky with a few of the results but there are lots of positives to take from the games we’ve already played. We’ve been getting used to a new style of play that he (Woodgate) wants to play.”

Randolph was also asked about the differences between Woodgate and former manager Tony Pulis, with the goalkeeper pointing towards style of play.

“They’re both very hands on, they take the sessions, the only real difference is the style of football,” he added.

“I think under Tony we were a lot more compact and defensive minded, which enabled us to go and stay in games and nick some goals.

“Now, we’re more expansive and open and attacking, so the lads are all enjoying it.”

Randolph has now joined up with the Republic of Ireland squad alongside assistant manager Robbie Keane, who he says has settled well at Boro.

Boro’s No.1 says Woodgate’s assistant has settled in well on Teesside.

“All the lads like him, he’s fit straight into the club and into his role,” said Randolph.

“There are positive signs and Robbie is still upbeat and so is Jonathan Woodgate.

“Hopefully our luck will change and we’ll start getting the results.”
