Championship Could Be Divided Into North And South Next Season

The EFL could split the Championship in two to help reduce the risk of the competition being halted by a rise of COVID-19 cases next season, according to reports in England.

The suggested plan would see the second tier split into North and South, with teams only playing against others in their own region.

It means there would only be 22 games next season before a new promotion system where the two top clubs from each division would play off against each other.

With games likely to be played behind closed doors due to bans on mass gatherings, the reduced number of matches will not be the main concern, as there will be no matchday revenue anyway.

The main focus of the proposal will be to reduce costs, in terms of travel and accommodation, and it will also enable the season to be completed even if there are shutdowns caused by the global health crisis.
